UAE student visa

To study in Dubai, a student visa is required. If you don’t have any relatives in the UAE, your university will be your sponsor. If you’re planning to study in the UAE, here’s all you need to know about obtaining a student visa.

Required Documents

You’ll need to get your admissions letter first from the university before starting the application process. Then you will need to submit all your documents to the university who will handle the application for you.

  • Admission letter (provided by the university)
  • Filled-out application form (provided by the university)
  • Clear color Passport copy (with at least 6 months’ validity)
  • 2 passport size photos (white background)
  • Receipt for visa and tuition fees
  • Copy of current visa (if you are inside UAE)
  • Copy of offer of admission letter (only for new students)

Medical Test

Applicants are required to take a medical test at a certified UAE medical center upon arrival. The test usually includes a general health check-up, chest X-ray, and tests for HIV (AIDS), Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Tuberculosis (TB), Leprosy, and Syphilis.

Visa Fee

The visa processing fee depends on the institute you applied for. A health insurance fee might also be included, depending on your university. If it’s not, you will need to get your own health insurance. For example, the 1-year student visa of University of Wollongong Dubai costs AED 7,035 (including one-year medical insurance, medical test fee and deposit).

Processing Time

The visa application process normally takes two weeks and normally applications undergo a security check by UAE government authorities. However, some applications can take up to 1 month or more. Ideally, the student visa process should start at least 1–2 months prior to the beginning of the semester, so that they can care of the other aspects of the departure checklist. Take note that a student residence visa in the UAE becomes invalid if a student stays out of UAE for six months. If you have a valid reason for doing so, such as a medical reason or family emergency, you will need to submit documentation to the immigration authorities.

Work on Student Visa

International students over 18 years old can apply for work permits for part-time jobs in the UAE. Therefore, you can apply for internships, work experience, or jobs to help fund your expenses and build your resume while studying for a degree in the UAE.

Validity and Renewal

Student visas for full-time programs offered in the UAE are valid for a maximum of 12 months. If your program is longer than that, you’ll need to renew it after a year. Simply go to the related department in your university and they will help you to renew.
